Frequently Asked Questions
Ingredient related questions
All of the ingredients are fairly common, readily available, and can be found in most grocery stores. I personally order protein powder online due to brand preference, but protein powder can also be found in most grocery stores. See the next two questions for information about protein powder.
The Keto Dessert Cookbook does not require any protein powder. Many of the recipes in the other four books require protein powder. The protein powder can be omitted from the frosting recipes in all eBooks, as well as from the cookie recipes in The Healthy Cookie eCookbook. Omitting the protein called for in the cake, donut, and brownie recipes will affect the texture, so I cannot guarantee the results if the protein powder is omitted.
I use a naturally sweetened, lactose-free, gluten-free, sugar-free and soy-free whey protein isolate from a company called ABOUTTIME. AboutTime protein comes in a wide variety of amazing flavors (think birthday cake, cinnamon swirl, and pumpkin spice latte!) as well as the classic vanilla and chocolate flavors. They also carry casein protein, vegan protein, superfood blends, coffee protein, pre-workout, and more. Vegan protein powder can be used in the recipes but may yield a slightly denser (but still delicious) texture. AboutTime carries a vegan pea protein isolate for those who need a dairy-free option. If you would like to try ABOUTTIME supplements, you may use the discount code BAKETOBEFIT for 15% off any order at www.tryabouttime.com If you have a different brand you would prefer to use, any whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, or a whey + casein blend should work well in the recipes – just keep in mind that the flavors and sweetness of the recipes are optimized using AboutTime protein. If you prefer not to use protein powder, I recommend checking out the new Keto Dessert Cookbook, as it does not use any protein powder.
I am located in the US, but from my experience so far, I know that people have purchased the eBooks from many different countries and have not had trouble making the recipes. I made an effort to use widely available ingredients and there is also a substitution section included at the beginning of all the eBooks with options for substituting the ingredients just in case there is something you do not have.
I use ingredients such as gluten-free flour, oats, protein powder, applesauce, coconut oil, nut butters, natural unrefined sweeteners, cocoa powder, yogurt (or dairy-free alternative), chocolate (see the next question for chocolate recommendations), salt/baking soda/baking powder etc. There is also an ingredient guide included in each eBook explaining all of the ingredients and possible substitutions.
I enjoy using Lily's Sweets Chocolate (sugar-free, stevia-sweetened) and Enjoy Life Foods chocolate (allergen-free). You may use any chocolate that you prefer in the recipes.
No. Only natural, unrefined sweeteners are used in the recipes. Examples of sweeteners used are stevia, erythritol, pure maple syrup, and/or coconut palm sugar. However, you may substitute any sweeteners you prefer. Instructions for how to substitute sweeteners are included in the eBooks.
Allergen related questions
Yes, all of the recipes are gluten-free.
Yes, many of them are. All of the recipes in the cake, cookie, and donut cookbooks are egg-free. Almost all of the recipes in the brownie cookbook are egg-free, aside from two of the bonus recipes. Please see below for details about dairy ingredients. The recipes in The Ketogenic Dessert Cookbook require eggs, so they may not be optimal for a vegan diet.
Many of the recipes use whey protein powder. The brand I use is lactose-free so it may be suitable for those who are lactose intolerant, but whey protein is derived from dairy, so it would not be suitable for those with a milk protein allergy. Dairy free alternatives can be substituted. For dairy-free protein powder, I recommend a brand called Yep It's Vegan, and you can use the code SARAH for 10% off www.YepItsVegan.com. Some of the cake and frosting recipes use Greek yogurt or cream cheese. Dairy-free alternatives can be substituted. Simple instructions for how to make these substitutions are included in the eBooks. The Keto Dessert Cookbook does not use protein powder or yogurt, so it is easy to make dairy-free with simple substitutions for butter and/or cream cheese.
Aside from coconut, most of the recipes are nut-free. There are nut-free substitutions suggested in the “Ingredients and Substitutions” sections at the beginning of each eBook for any recipes that call for nut ingredients. Most people who are intolerant or allergic to nuts can eat coconut. If you cannot eat coconut, I would not recommend purchasing the eBooks, as coconut flour is used in many of the recipes and does not have a reliable substitution. However, if you simply do not like the taste of coconut, the use of coconut flour does not add any coconut flavor to the recipes. The Ketogenic Dessert Cookbook requires almond flour in many of the recipes, so it is not as nut-free friendly. However, sunflower seed flower may be used as a substitute for almond flour.
Yes. None of the recipes contain any soy ingredients. Always make sure that the chocolate/chocolate chips you use are soy-free if you have an allergy, as many brands contain soy lecithin.
