Frequently Asked Questions
Ingredient related questions
All of the ingredients are fairly common, readily available, and can be found in most grocery stores. I personally order protein powder online due to brand preference, but protein powder can also be found in most grocery stores. See the next two questions for information about protein powder.
Most of the recipes require protein powder. The protein powder can be omitted from the frosting recipes in all eBooks, as well as from the cookie recipes in The Healthy Cookie eCookbook. Omitting the protein called for in the cake, donut, and brownie recipes will affect the texture, so I cannot guarantee the results if the protein powder is omitted. See the next question for details on my protein powder recommendations.
The following are my brand recommendations; however, you may use any brand you prefer in the recipes. I have been using Slap Nutrition whey protein powder for the past four years, and I still have not found a protein I like better in terms of quality, taste, and texture. Slap Nutrition whey is a cold processed, micro-filtered whey protein isolate that is very high quality and easily digestible. It has a short ingredient list and it is naturally sweetened with stevia. The nutritional breakdown for one scoop is about 100 calories with negligible fat or carbs, and 24 grams of protein. Slap protein comes in a variety of delicious flavors, including Creamy Vanilla, Birthday Cake, Molten Chocolate, Cinnamon Streusel, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Coffee, and Oatmeal Cookie. If you would like to try Slap protein powder or any other Slap Nutrition products, you may use the discount code SARAH for 10% off at www.WeSlap.com. My recommendation for a dairy-free/vegan protein powder is called Yep, It’s Vegan. This protein powder is a blend of pea and rice protein, and it is naturally sweetened with stevia. Using the vegan protein will result in a slightly denser texture than the whey protein, but it still works well in the recipes. One scoop is 120 calories (34 g) 2 g of fat, 2 g of carbs, and 25 g of protein. It truly has the best flavor and texture of any vegan protein powder I have tried. You may also use my discount code SARAH for 10% off at www.YepItsVegan.com. You may also use other brands of protein powder; these are just my recommendations.
From my experience so far, I know that people have purchased the eBooks from many different countries and have not had trouble making the recipes. I made an effort to use widely available ingredients and there is also a substitution section included at the beginning of all the eBooks with options for substituting the ingredients just in case there is something you do not have.
I use ingredients such as gluten-free flour, oatmeal, protein powder, applesauce, coconut oil, nut butters, natural unrefined sweeteners, cocoa powder, yogurt (or dairy-free alternative), chocolate (see the next question for my refined-sugar free chocolate recommendation), salt/baking soda etc. There is also an ingredient guide included in each eBook explaining all of the ingredients and possible substitutions.
My recommendation for a refined sugar-free chocolate is a brand called Eating Evolved. They make chocolate with only pure organic cacao, organic coconut sugar, and organic cacao butter. One of their 72% chocolate bars chopped up into chunks makes the perfect refined sugar-free alternative to chocolate chips. I also love their coconut butter cups and roasted coconut butter. If you place an order, you may use the code SARAH at checkout for an extra free chocolate with your order. Go to www.eatingevolved.com to check out their range of healthy chocolate options available. Other brands of chocolate/chocolate chips may also be used. I enjoy using Lily's Sweets chocolate (stevia sweetened) and Enjoy Life Foods chocolate (allergen-free), as well.
No. Only natural, unrefined sweeteners are used in the recipes. Examples of sweeteners used are stevia, pure maple syrup, and coconut palm sugar. However, you may substitute any sweeteners you prefer. Instructions for how to substitute sweeteners are included in the eBooks.
Allergen related questions
Yes, all of the recipes are gluten-free.
Yes. All of the recipes in the cake, cookie, and donut cookbooks are egg-free. Almost all of the recipes in the brownie cookbook are egg-free, aside from two of the bonus recipes. Please see below for details about dairy ingredients.
Many of the recipes use whey protein powder. The brand I use is lactose-free so it may be suitable for those who are lactose intolerant, but whey protein is derived from dairy, so it would not be suitable for those with a milk protein allergy. Dairy free alternatives can be substituted. For dairy-free protein powder, I recommend a brand called Yep It's Vegan, and you can use the code SARAH for 10% off www.YepItsVegan.com. Some of the cake and frosting recipes use Greek yogurt or cream cheese. Dairy-free alternatives can be substituted. Simple instructions for how to make these substitutions are included in the eBooks.
Aside from coconut, most of the recipes are nut-free. There are nut-free substitutions suggested in the “Ingredients and Substitutions” sections at the beginning of each eBook for any recipes that call for nut ingredients. Most people who are intolerant or allergic to nuts can eat coconut. If you cannot eat coconut, I would not recommend purchasing the eBooks, as coconut flour is used in many of the recipes and does not have a reliable substitution. However, if you simply do not like the taste of coconut, the use of coconut flour does not add any coconut flavor to the recipes.
Yes. None of the recipes contain any soy ingredients. Always make sure that the chocolate/chocolate chips you use are soy-free, as many brands contain soy lecithin. My recommendations for soy-free chocolate are Eating Evolved (use code SARAH for an extra free chocolate with order) or Enjoy Life Foods brand.
